Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance

Honoring the Legacy

Each January the City of Irving holds a special event to recognize and appreciate the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This annual observance takes place at the Irving Arts Center, and features a variety of music and dances performed by the Dallas Black Dance Theatre.

The City of Irving hosted an essay contest promoting the theme “United Together,” with three age categories: grades 3-5, grades 6-8 and grades 9-12. Judging was based on clarity, grammar and how well the theme was developed depending on the age of the writer.

Congratulations to this year's winners: Alaina Oommen (Grade 5, Great Hearts Irving), Shambhavi Mokashi (Grade 7, Coppell Middle School East), and Jorge Tomaylla Eme (Grade 11, MacArthur High School). These students had the opportunity to read their winning essays at the event.
