Testing

Those interested in becoming a firefighter for the City of Irving must register to take an entrance examination. The Fire Department entrance exam is usually given once a year. A Firefighter Entrance Examination was administered on September 3, 2019. Click here to view the eligibility list created from this exam. A tentative schedule for hiring has also been created for this exam, click on the following link to view: Tentative Hiring Schedule

Approximately four weeks before the exam is to be given, registrants will be sent a letter containing information about the exam date, time, and place. Applicants must then sign and return a copy of this letter to be eligible to take the exam.

Applicants who pass the exam will be placed on an eligibility list ranked by test score. If all conditions are met to become a firefighter with the City of Irving, positions are offered as vacancies arise. The eligibility list remains in effect for one year. Those wishing to be considered after the list expires must again register and take the next entrance examination.
